throughput per watt reality check

What worked for me was pretty simple. On 7900 XTX, the easiest win is often to back off the aggressive settings and see whether the problem survives.
small models can still be good

Interesting, I hadn't tried that. That matches what I saw on 7900 XTX. I got better results once I stopped chasing one metric and just looked at whether the workflow felt usable.
throughput matters, but tail latency matters too

My first guess would be this: Start by verifying the driver/runtime combo, then test with a smaller prompt, then look at reranking. A lot of these threads end up being one bad config plus a pile of conclusions drawn from it.

A couple questions before I guess too hard. Is this local-only or are you routing anything externally?

I don't think that's the whole story. The reported numbers can look compelling, but in ordinary usage I didn't see the same benefit. Not saying you're wrong, just that I wouldn't lock that in as the lesson yet.

A couple things I'd check first. On 7900 XTX, the easiest win is often to back off the aggressive settings and see whether the problem survives.
