This keeps coming up in conversation so I figured I'd start a thread.
The more I work with local setups, the more it seems like tail latency decides everything downstream.
Maybe obvious to some of you, but it clicked for me this week.
For context, I'm not chasing leaderboard numbers. I mostly want the system to feel consistent day to day.

Can you fill in a bit more context? What model, what runtime, and roughly what context size?

Good point. That matches what I saw on 7900 XTX. Worth rechecking your defaults though, because one bad assumption can make the rest of the thread look confusing.

Tried to reproduce it just now. My result was mixed: first run looked bad, second run looked normal. The main thing that moved was latency, not quality.
There are a few different conversations hiding inside this thread, so being explicit about the goal helps.

A couple questions before I guess too hard. Are you testing this on GB200 or something else?

I think the bottleneck is somewhere else. The reported numbers can look compelling, but in ordinary usage I didn't see the same benefit. Could be a workload difference, but I wouldn't generalize too fast from one setup.

A couple things I'd check first. Before rebuilding anything, I'd test one clean baseline with Mistral and compare from there. Not glamorous advice, but repeatable baselines save a lot of time.
