Blackwell deployment chatter
#1
Spent some time on this today and wanted to compare notes.

I'm comparing two approaches here: keep it simple on 5090, or squeeze more out of the stack and deal with the complexity.

What would you pick if you had to live with it for a few months?

Appreciate the detail. That matches what I saw on mini PC. Worth rechecking your defaults though, because one bad assumption can make the rest of the thread look confusing.
still benchmarking everything

I think the bottleneck is somewhere else. I've seen people blame KV cache pressure when the real issue was much more mundane. Could be a workload difference, but I wouldn't generalize too fast from one setup.

A couple things I'd check first. Before rebuilding anything, I'd test one clean baseline with Kimi and compare from there. Not glamorous advice, but repeatable baselines save a lot of time.

I don't think that's the whole story. I wouldn't optimize around that first. On my side the bigger swing came from the runtime and not the model. Not saying you're wrong, just that I wouldn't lock that in as the lesson yet.

Good point. That matches what I saw on B200. Worth rechecking your defaults though, because one bad assumption can make the rest of the thread look confusing.

That matches what I was seeing. I ended up in about the same place using MLX. The biggest change for me was simplifying the stack instead of adding one more optimization layer. Turns out 'just one more test' was a lie.

My first guess would be this: Start by verifying the driver/runtime combo, then test with a smaller prompt, then look at workstation thermals. A lot of these threads end up being one bad config plus a pile of conclusions drawn from it.

Good point. The pattern around tool calling has been pretty similar for me. I got better results once I stopped chasing one metric and just looked at whether the workflow felt usable.
Mostly CUDA, sometimes wrong, usually measured
