This keeps coming up in conversation so I figured I'd start a thread.
One thing I keep noticing is that people underestimate MoE serving until they actually try to run this stuff for more than one afternoon.
Maybe obvious to some of you, but it clicked for me this week.

My first guess would be this: On GB200, the easiest win is often to back off the aggressive settings and see whether the problem survives. A lot of these threads end up being one bad config plus a pile of conclusions drawn from it.

Maybe, but I had the opposite result. I wouldn't optimize around that first. On my side the bigger swing came from the runtime and not the model. Could be a workload difference, but I wouldn't generalize too fast from one setup.

worth checking the driver first.

Interesting, I hadn't tried that. I ended up in about the same place using LM Studio. Worth rechecking your defaults though, because one bad assumption can make the rest of the thread look confusing.

I tested this tonight. On 7900 XTX with PyTorch, I saw basically the same behavior. The surprise was that memory pressure showed up before throughput collapsed.

That matches what I was seeing. I ended up in about the same place using PyTorch. Worth rechecking your defaults though, because one bad assumption can make the rest of the thread look confusing.

Thanks, that helps. I ended up in about the same place using MLX. I got better results once I stopped chasing one metric and just looked at whether the workflow felt usable.
