structured output failures: worth it?
#1
This keeps coming up in conversation so I figured I'd start a thread.

It feels like the conversation has shifted hard toward inference and serving details lately, and honestly that makes sense once you start dealing with VRAM headroom.

Maybe obvious to some of you, but it clicked for me this week.

What worked for me was pretty simple. Before rebuilding anything, I'd test one clean baseline with DeepSeek and compare from there.

I don't think that's the whole story. I wouldn't optimize around that first. On my side the bigger swing came from the runtime and not the model. Worth testing the simpler explanation before adopting the more interesting one.

My first guess would be this: Start by verifying the driver/runtime combo, then test with a smaller prompt, then look at continuous batching. Once you know the plain path works, then add the faster path back in piece by piece.

What exact setup are you running? Is this local-only or are you routing anything externally?
mostly local

Can you fill in a bit more context? Is this local-only or are you routing anything externally?

If you post your exact settings, people here can probably narrow it down pretty fast.

I'd approach it in a boring order. Start by verifying the driver/runtime combo, then test with a smaller prompt, then look at router policy. Not glamorous advice, but repeatable baselines save a lot of time.

I'd approach it in a boring order. If you're on vLLM, I'd confirm the version first and then reduce variables until the behavior is obvious. A lot of these threads end up being one bad config plus a pile of conclusions drawn from it.

I hit almost the same issue last night.

Tried to reproduce it just now. The issue went away once I changed one setting and restarted the stack cleanly. The surprise was that memory pressure showed up before throughput collapsed.
