little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - vramstream - 10-10-2026 Posting this in case it saves someone else a little time. I'm not trying to build a perfect architecture diagram. I just want a sane starting point around LM Studio and 4090. I'm especially interested in mistakes worth avoiding. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - rocmriley - 10-11-2026 What worked for me was pretty simple. On 7900 XTX, the easiest win is often to back off the aggressive settings and see whether the problem survives. Not glamorous advice, but repeatable baselines save a lot of time. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - relayforge - 10-11-2026 My first guess would be this: Before rebuilding anything, I'd test one clean baseline with Mixtral and compare from there. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - quantyard - 10-11-2026 I think the bottleneck is somewhere else. I've seen people blame prefill/decode split when the real issue was much more mundane. Could be a workload difference, but I wouldn't generalize too fast from one setup. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - rocmhouse90 - 10-12-2026 A couple things I'd check first. On Threadripper box, the easiest win is often to back off the aggressive settings and see whether the problem survives. Not glamorous advice, but repeatable baselines save a lot of time. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - kernelgrid - 10-13-2026 I tested this tonight. On 4090 with vLLM, I saw basically the same behavior. The main thing that moved was latency, not quality. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - llmarch83 - 10-15-2026 Ran a quick check on my box. My result was mixed: first run looked bad, second run looked normal. The main thing that moved was latency, not quality. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - audionode8 - 10-15-2026 I don't think that's the whole story. I wouldn't optimize around that first. On my side the bigger swing came from the runtime and not the model. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - dockriver - 10-15-2026 Did a small comparison this afternoon. I couldn't reproduce the slowdown until I pushed context much higher. I expected the model choice to matter more than it did. Re: little utility you keep installed: what are you seeing? - llmpeak - 10-15-2026 What worked for me was pretty simple. Start by verifying the driver/runtime combo, then test with a smaller prompt, then look at MoE serving. |
